Today is Earth Day, when many people look at the state of the environment and determine what they can do to ensure a healthy future for the planet. Over the past decade, Aveda has chosen to support the protection of clean water, and this month championed the cause with fundraising events and activities. One of the brand’s greatest success stories in this regard, has been the funds raised through selling its annual candles for the cause. For 10 years, they have donated 100% of the full $12 suggested retail price of its signature limited edition Light the Way Candles, to Global Greengrants Funds, a non-profit organization that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups seeking to solve pressing environmental problems. Among many programs, this year Aveda plans to boost efforts with its Catwalks for Clean Water 2016 events, which will raise money for 50 clean water partners around the world—over twice as many as in 2007. Aveda’s global network of salons and experience centers, along with its artists and guests have raised a total of $38 million to support clean water projects. Throughout the years, Aveda has pioneered new benchmarks of environmental responsibility in beauty. It was the first company to sign the Ceres Principles in 1989—a nonprofit organization mobilizing business leadership on climate change, water scarcity and other sustainability challenges—and the first beauty company to manufacture with 100% wind power in its primary facility. Aveda was also the first beauty company to receive a Cradle To Cradle charter for its commitment to sustainable products, packaging and production. In 2013, Aveda was honored with the first Legacy Leaders Award from Cradle to Cradle for its pioneering role in environmental leadership. Currently 11 products are Cradle To Cradle Certified.
